More and more people are learning about Six Sigma.
Many people ask themselves, "Would I use a Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification?" But what does Six Sigma really mean?
Jack Welch, president and general manager of General Electric, said that "Six Sigma is a quality program that, when all is said and done, improves your customer experience, reduces costs and builds better leaders."
Six Sigma is a process improvement methodology that follows the following 5 steps (DMAIC):
- Definition: what's the problem and how big? If the project is justified, who are the team members?
- Measurement: understanding the process, identifying key variables, ensuring data accuracy and starting the data collection process.
- Data analysis and verification of cause-effect relationships.
- Statistical determination of root causes for which finding solutions is justified.
- Improve or optimize the process by identifying and implementing solutions. Determining the effectiveness of the actions.
- Control of the new process to ensure that the improvements obtained are maintained.
Implementation of control systems, such as SPC (Statistical Control of Processes), production panels, visual management and ensuring continuous monitoring of the process.
Six Sigma trainings are conducted on several levels of expertise:
- Champion (for managers)
- Yellow Belt (YB - project team members),
- Green Belt (GB),
- Black Belt (BB) and
- Black Belt Master (MBB).
GB, BB and MBB are the levels that can lead Six Sigma improvement projects.
Of course, this means that serious Six Sigma training (for Green Belt or Black Belt, usually a minimum of 10 days) always includes statistical tools and real projects for each participant, otherwise they are merely slide presentations, with no actual earnings for participants or the employer company.
In conclusion: Six Sigma is useful to the organization only to the extent that, through projects, it produces measurable improvement results and only if it is supported by management. Even if the processes are close to perfection, especially if you target "Zero Defects" it is important to know that you need Six Sigma more than anyone else.
