Lean Manufacturing - 3M: Muda Mura Muri

3M comes from the first letters of the three words: Muda, Mura, Muri. These are Japanese terms that refer to the three categories of waste that can be found in a business.

Lean Management or Lean is the best way to manage waste disposal and deployment flow. Lean management, which comes from the Toyota Production System, is one of the most dominant management philosophies, both in the industrial environment and in the service environment. One of the reasons for the success of this system is its simplicity.

The whole concept is based on a common idea of so-called "waste".
This Japanese method, which was developed and implemented within the Toyota production system (TPS), aims to increase productivity by phasing out waste. Understanding each term is essential for implementing the appropriate lean production processes.
Muda (無 駄) means "useless, wasteful" and refers to processes or activities that do not bring value. These types of losses do not help the organization or employees in any way.

They increase costs and make activities take longer than they should.
Mura (斑) means "inequality, irregularity, non-uniformity". It is a loss caused by unevenness in production and services. It can occur due to non-compliance or even lack of standards in an organization.

Muri (無理) means "unreasonable, impossible, overloaded". This category of losses is the result of difficult activities or processes that overburden employees.
It is generally caused by a lack of training or standards for employees to follow.

The main objectives of TPS are to highlight overload (muri) and inconsistency and to eliminate waste (mura).
The most significant effects on the delivery of process value are achieved by designing a process capable of producing the necessary results without problems. It is also essential to ensure that the process is flexible, stress-free and without "muri" (overload), as this generates "mura" (waste).
