Prioritization; Make the most of opportunities

During the improvement process, after defining the problem, collecting the data and analyzing them, decisions must be made regarding the choice of optimal solutions to be implemented.

After finding the root causes, the project team can generate several improvement ideas, only a few of which need to be selected based on an objective assessment.
Prioritization is a decision-making, rational process that is achieved through criteria. Most of the times, when the team members find the best criteria, there is also a consensus in the team, which will help the successful implementation of the chosen solutions.
The criteria in choosing the optimal solution depend on the context and could be, as the case may be: Impact and difficulty of implementation (also expressed by cost / time of implementation).

The term "optimal" used is related to the management strategy of the moment. If it is a period of development then the impact would be primary and the secondary cost and in a period of crisis could be reversed.
The easiest way to choose solutions is the prioritization matrix. The solutions are placed on the matrix depending on the impact that is estimated and the difficulty of implementation.

We work in a team and choose in principle solutions that have a greater impact and are easier to implement.
If we want to select optimal solutions based on several factors, we use the Pugh matrix (Cause-Effect Matrix).

The technique gets its name from Stuart Pugh and has become a standard part of the Six Sigma methodology.
The Pugh matrix facilitates the decision based on criteria in which the options are assigned scores in relation to the criteria. The selection is made on the basis of consolidated scores.
